Mondays: Garfield Got ‘Em Wrong(ish)

Mondays don’t suck.

Well, okay, that’s wrong…they do suck. Yes, they most certainly do suck, but not any more so than Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

That’s the findings from a study which was recently published in the Journal of Positive Psychology.

Here is a quote from one of the authors, courtesy of those crumpet-loving folks at the BBC News:

Prof Arthur Stone of Stony Brook University said: “Despite our global beliefs about lousy Mondays, we conclude that this belief should be abandoned.”

“Cultural myths may vastly over-emphasise actual day of the week mood patterns.”

Weird British-spelling notwithstanding, I guess these cats are on to something here.

Does Monday suck? Heck yes, but does it really suck any more than Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday? Not so much.

It’s pointed out in the article that the real reason people hate Mondays is because—surprise, surprise—it means their weekend (read: free time) is gone for another five days.

The level of suck from Monday to Tuesday or Wednesday to Thursday, however, is a constant, so people notice it far less than they do when making the transition from Sunday to Monday.

So there you have it, as much as people hate Mondays, it turns out that people hate Tuesday through Thursday just as badly. You know, because they’re still at work…and that kinda blows when the alternative is not being at work.

I guess the important take away from this is that people hate work and would be much happier living one gigantic, perpetual weekend for all of eternity.

Thank Jebus we have science to figure these things out for us, huh?!

  1. I think friday sucks as well because you are still working. Hell even sundays suck cause you know you have to go back to work the next day. So the really only good day is saturday, 1 outta 7 is pretty bad, even in baseball standards

  2. But I think that Monday sucks more, because there is a certain amount of momentum that it takes to get going on a Monday…. that is not nearly as much energy needed for the rest of the week. Yes, there are times that we are feeling off on other days as well, but it’s really Monday that people are feeling the blues. I compare it to a jet airplane’s take off… it takes a great deal of speed, fuel, and energy to lift that thing off the ground but the rest of the flight it coasts….. much like the work week! 🙂
