The Cat Countdown Continues

I’ve been yammering on for weeks now about how Grace and I are inching closer and closer to finally getting a cat.

Since not all of you who read my blog are my friend on Facebook, you know, privacy and all that jazz—although you can all be fans of this blog—I figured I should share the latest update with y’all here.

We took a pretty big step last night and we filled out the adoption form for Honey, she’s the sweet gal with the orange face pictured at the top of this post.

The last couple weeks has been a lot of us scouring the interwebs—specifically the ever-crashing Petfinder.com—for a cat that we could agree seemed like a good fit for both of us.

The issue is that Grace and I seem to want two very different cats.

I laid out the issues at length in a previous entry, so I’ll try to keep it short and sweet today.

Grace wants a lap cat that can chillax and is very un-diva-like in its desire for our attention.

I want a cat that is strung out on cocaine and absinth and just completely jacked up all the time so that we get to spend every waking minute running around the house together like mentally-stunted deer in a forest full of beef jerky trees and cotton candy shrubbery.

(Blogger’s Note: The above scenario may be based on a dream I had this weekend.)

Needless to say, it has been a bit of an arduous task to find a cat that seems to ride the fine line between our varying wants.

Most of the pet profiles—which generally sound as though they are written by senile old people who are off their meds—indicate that a cat is very much one or the other.

It has been quite the task to find a cat who can strike the harmonious balance between easy-going and batshit crazy that we covet in our first feline.

As such, we’ve taken a more relaxed approach and are shooting for a cat that is described as both chill and playful and that we find abso-freakin’-lutely adorable.

We thought we had a winner with Augustus (the super cute lil guy pictured to the right), but unfortunately, he was too young to be taken alone and apparently was suffering from some serious post-traumatic stress disorder and would spend all day crying if we left him alone while at work.

Another factor keeping us from Gus was that they required he be taken with a second cat (many adoption places have that same rule for kittens) and our lease only allows us one cat.

Now sure, sure…we could break that rule and probably never get in any trouble for it—assuming the landlord doesn’t read my blog, that is—but we are super Midwestern and don’t want to rock the boat so we’re going to follow the rules.

So when we saw Honey we were hooked.

A solo cat? Check. Chill? Check. Playful? Check. Adorable? Check.

On top of that she’s orange and looks strikingly similar to my departed friend, Tom S. Katt, which has proven to be a major selling point for me throughout this search process.

Toss in the fact that Grace and I both have a weakness for chunky cats and she’s a keeper.

Anyway, so that’s where we sit right now. We’ve officially submitted the adoption form and we’ve yet to hear back, which is driving me freakin’ crazy. I’ve been refreshing my email roughly every 30 seconds since I sent in the application last night and still nothing. I’m on pins and needles here.

Grace mentioned that I may have jumped the gun posting about this on Facebook (and likely, if she ever reads my blog, here as well) because we don’t actually, you know, have Honey yet.

I don’t think there’s any sort of “wait one trimester to announce” equivalency with pet adoption, but I could be wrong.

Either way, I figure y’all have been going through this whole process with us on Facebook, Twitter, this blog and even in real life…so it only makes sense that I keep everyone in the loop.

I’ll let you know what happens next.

  1. Ooo pretty… btw can you start calling me gus? Will that make up for augustus?!

  2. Not that it’s helpful now, but the adoption center was probably closed today. You know – holiday and all. If you don’t get response tomorrow, that’s when you should start getting antsy.

    • Yeah, I kept trying to tell myself that, but at the same time, I was all “they’ve still gotta feed the kitties and stuff” so I assumed someone would have to be in there…right…right…RIGHT?!

  3. If you get more than one cat, they’ll only end up plotting world domination together.

    • My fear is that if I get more than I one cat, I’ll end up with ALL THE CATS and then when Grace and I run out of money to feed them, they’ll undoubtedly turn on us and devour our flesh.

  5. Good luck! I’m jealous. I want a cat, too. But my Saint Bernard would think it was lunch. 😦

    • …yeah, that would probably be an issue with the folks at the shelter. I’m not expert, but I think they frown on that kinda thing.
