Great Moments in Spam

Getting spam is nothing new.

I’ve received about 36-bajillionty spam emails in the last twelve minutes.

I get spam comments here on the blog by the boatload.

I’ve even started to grow accustomed to receiving spam texts and Tweets on a regular basis.

Today, however, I got a taste of something brand-new. For the first-time ever, I was legitimately spammed on instant messenger…by my brother.

Well, okay, it wasn’t really my brother, but it was someone who has clearly hacked his long-since abandoned Yahoo! account.

Needless to say the hacker doesn’t know much about my brother, because it was pretty clearly bullshit from the word go. There was some awkward use of emoticons, legitimate punctuation, referencing Macbooks as though it is something my brother would actually want and mostly the use of a shortened URL.

My brother has sent me URLs that are 30,000 characters long before, I have a hard time imagining he suddenly get swept up in the wonders of bit.ly.

Oh yeah, and the other pretty dead giveaway, aside from the fact that my brother NEVER uses instant messenger, is that at roughly this time of day, my brother is probably roofing a house in seven-degree weather…not exactly conducive to instant messaging.

Part of me wishes that I hadn’t played my trump card so quickly.

I think it would have been a good ole time to see if “Catherine” could recount a little bit more about when and how we first met on the interwebs.

I used to do the same thing back in the day when telemarketers would call at my parents’ house. I’d just take the phone and keep asking them asinine questions and getting them off-topic.

I thought it was a laugh riot.

Here’s hoping “Catherine” tries to hook me up with a Macbook again in the near future so that I can make up for my blunder.

That’s a conversation I’d love to pass along to the world.

  1. Yes! Laura Andersen has been trying her damndest to get me to click sketchy shortened URLs. Clearly things in Abu Dhabi aren’t as they seem.
