Sad Realization of the Day: New Girl Kinda Sucked

Let’s go ahead and get the full-disclosure out of the way, I’m a big ole fan of Zooey Deschanel.

This should be news to precisely none of My Faithful Readers as I’ve ranted and raved about her acting, her music, and her overall hottiness (and similarity to other hotties) on a number of occasions here at Blank Stares and Blank Pages.

That’s why it was such a bummer to find her new show, New Girl on FOX, was kind of awful.

Maybe it’s because roughly 90% of the first episode was given away in the trailer.

Maybe it’s because they tried to jam a whole big bunch of plot into 22 minutes.

Maybe it’s because it was all very, very unbelievable (“Oh yeah, feel free to live here complete stranger. You know models and that’s enough incentive to allow a random female move into our man den.”)…

Most likely it’s because I was expecting to have my face rocked clean off by the episode and, when it was all said and done, I had no face rocking experience whatsoever.

The critics have primarily been diggin’ on the show, advertisers are tripping over themselves to get in on the action and it drew monster ratings so it’s going to stick around long enough to try and win me back and because I love me some Zooey, it’ll get a second (and likely a third) chance from this guy.

I thought the final five minutes or so was the best part of the entire show and perhaps that’s for the best, had the show started off awesome and progressively worked its way downhill I’d be hard-pressed to give it a second shot.

My hope is that the first half of the show felt so awful and awkward simply because they were rushing through all of the extremely “meh” plot that was given away in the previews and they simply needed to set us up for all of the wacky hi-jinks that are sure to come in the future.

If it turns out that every episode is as, um, “ungood” as the first 15+ minutes or so of the pilot were, it’s entirely possible that Zooey will have disappointed me for the first time.

Here’s hoping it doesn’t come to that…

    • Yeah, my hope is that it rebounds something fierce after the lackluster debut. Most pilots are usually pretty piss-poor when paired with the rest of the show, but a shitty pilot is also enough to kill the show outright and/or any chance that peeps come back to thus show…thus slowly, but surely killing the show.

    • It’s picked up a bit since the first episode, but I can’t really get into it. It goes from being good(ish) one minute to being unbearable the next.

They’re pushing the whole “adorkable” thing WAY too hard and they’ve turned Zooey’s character into more of a caricature than a real, watchable person. Until they get her more grounded in realism, I’m going to have a hard time thinking this show is going to last beyond the year.
